Sunset Silhouette
BRP (13), originally uploaded by Appalachian Encounters.
This perfectly cooperative horse stood still posing for me during a 30 minute sunset along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Little Trouble
Little Trouble, originally uploaded by Appalachian Encounters.
So small, a group of us walked right over him lying on the trail. Only a few inches long, but gave a good lunge at a stick and rattled his tail viciously. I don’t know what kind of snake he’ll grow up to be…
Poor Max
Poor Max had a run-in last night with a barbed wire fence, or a fierce animal and has lost a large part of his ear (the one limp on the left). Whatever happened, he’s missing a lot of cartilage and is a bit miserable. He doesn’t love his cone or the bandages, but I think he’s enjoying the gooood drugs!
Please keep Max in your thoughts…
“Bear Play”
“Bear Play”, originally uploaded by Appalachian Encounters.
The best time at the Grandfather Mountain habitats was watching these two bear play. They rolled around and taunted each other for a good 10-15 minutes or so. Not something you see everyday…

Driving up Little Cottonwood Canyon, these two walked out on to the side of the road as we were all driving up to Brighton to take advantage of the two new feet of snow!

Although not from very high, it was still fun to photo these two jumping off the platform at the Apple Barn in Moses Cone.

It’s about time to post my boy up here. Max has been with me for 4 years now and has been with me while I’ve taken just about every photo and certainly on every hike.
Butterfly’s Bush
One butterfly feeds another. This Swallowtail dangles on the flower of a Butterfly Bush.
First Day Out
This little robin decided to make his first leap out of the nest and landed just a few feet from me in my yard. While it would have been great to see him leave the nest, the time he spent posing (I didn’t check to see that it was a he, just guessing by the look) was well worth being there.
